Domestic wastewater treatment concrete VS GRP

What is the best wastewater treatment solution?

As a homeowner looking for a domestic wastewater treatment system, you will be asking yourself what type of material is best for a wastewater treatment plant.

Three choices are available on the market today:

  • Concrete
  • Plastic
  • Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP)

Different factors come into play when making this decision; we will run through these further down in the article. However, the important thing is to choose a domestic wastewater treatment system which works correctly and doesn’t cause you any trouble.

The three most important factors to achieve this are:

  1. Choose the correct wastewater treatment solution for your site
  2. Ensure installation is correct
  3. Ensure proper usage, operation and maintenance

To ensure this, you can check the following:

  • A site assessment and percolation test should be carried out by a qualified Site Assessor who will then be able to make recommendations as to which wastewater treatment systems are suitable for your site.
  • It is also essential that the wastewater treatment system installation be correct and follows the manufacturer’s recommendation.
  • As your wastewater treatment gets used daily, it requires monitoring on a regular basis. Check the manufacturer guidelines regarding the products, such as when desludging is necessary and when regular checks and servicing is required.

Domestic Wastewater Treatment concrete VS GRP VS Plastic

See below for a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the three different materials available on the market today.

Domestic wastewater treatment concrete VS GRP: the installation

Concrete tanks are a much heavier structure which requires bigger machinery for the installation process. Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and plastic tanks are lightweight and need smaller machinery to lift the tank in place, thus reducing both installation time and cost.

Domestic wastewater treatment concrete VS GRP: strength & durability

In general, wastewater treatment plants manufactured from concrete are perceived as being strong and durable. However, the quality can vary considerably depending on the grade and quality of the concrete used during manufacture, and of course the production/moulding process.

Tricel manufactures their range of Tricel Novo Wastewater treatment plants from a type of GRP known as SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound). Components that get made from SMC using heat and high pressure have a unique strength and durability in comparison to GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) tanks.

There are many different manufacturing processes employed to produce plastic wastewater treatment plants such as roto moulding and blow moulding, the strength of each tank depends on the raw material used such as polyethylene, polypropylene and the production process used.

It is advised that customers check the warranty provided on the structure of the plant and the warranty offered by the manufacturer on the mechanical parts (such as a blower, pumps).

Additional information

  • All septic tanks installed in Ireland should comply with S.R, 66 & EN12566-1 and all wastewater treatment plants should comply with S.R. 66 & EN12566-3.
  • Desludging for all types of domestic wastewater treatment systems is required.
  • Servicing and maintenance should also be done on a regular basis to ensure the system is working correctly and not polluting or creating a health hazard to people or the environment.
