Septic Tank Grants Available in Ireland
At Tricel, we are regularly asked by homeowners if there are septic tank grants available to upgrade their existing installation to a new wastewater treatment plant. In 2013 the EPA initiated its National Inspection plan, a regime for inspecting domestic wastewater treatment systems (or better known as septic tanks) throughout Ireland, grants to upgrade existing septic tanks was a huge talking point at the time. Outlined below is some useful information that will help answer your questions.
Currently, in Ireland, two septic tank grants are available for the repairs or upgrade of your system.
- Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (DWWTS) Scheme
- Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme
Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (DWWTS) Scheme
The responsibility for the provision of funding for the DWWTS scheme grant lies with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government (DHPLG). Additionally, under the Rural Water Programme, the local authorities will administer the grant scheme.
This DWWTS grant is available to help homeowners with the cost of repairs, upgrades or replacement of their domestic wastewater treatment system. The grant will only be issued following an inspection from an approved and appointed Environmental Protection Agency inspector and also upon receipt of an Advisory Notice by the local authority.

What are Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (DWWTS)?
Requirements to benefit from a septic tank grant – DWWTS scheme
The septic tanks grant scheme for domestic wastewater treatment systems is not a universal scheme. Indeed, to benefit from a grant, the following conditions apply:
- Inspection of the wastewater treatment system under the EPA’s inspection plan and an advisory notice under the Water Services (Amendment) Act 2012 issued by the local authority.
- Wastewater treatment system must have been registered by the homeowner by February 1, 2013.
- The grant is means-tested, visit the Irish Statute Book’s website to read more about the Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (Financial Assistance) Regulations 2013.
Costs of maintenance, servicing and de-sludging your wastewater treatment system are outside the scope of the septic tank grants scheme.
Level of Grant
As mentioned above, the septic tank grant is mean tested. Indeed, the level of grant is based on the gross household income and is either 50% or 80% of the approved costs of the works. See the table below.
|Household income*||% of approved cost of work available||Maximum grant|
|Up to 50,000€||80%||4,000€|
|50,001€ to 75,000€||50%||2,500€|
|Over 75,000€||0%||No grant available|
*The household income is calculated as the property owner’s gross taxable income in the previous tax year, together with that of his or her spouse or partner.
The grant applicant must submit supporting documentation, including evidence of:
- Household income.
- Itemised receipts from each contractor linked to remediation works.
- Copy of the contractor’s current tax clearance certificate issued to the contractor by the Revenue Commissioners.
Processing of application
