Project Introduction
In July 2024, a new residential estate comprising 12-13 houses in Killarney, Co. Kerry, required an effective stormwater management solution. Given the large car park space in front of the estate, a robust rain/stormwater retention and attenuation system was essential to comply with the planning permit. The project involved installing a 120m³ stormwater system to store and slowly release rainwater into the drainage system using geocellular attenuation crates, ensuring the area remains safe and functional during heavy rains.

THE CHALLENGE
The project required implementation of a rain/stormwater solution using geocellular attenuation crates that would handle the runoff from both the residential units and the expansive car park. The system needed to be efficient, reliable, and compliant with local regulations.
The Installation
The installation process was conducted in three phases:
Phase 1:
- Excavation of the site to create a 30x5x2m opening for the tank.
- Laying a gravel base, ensuring it was level and compacted.
Phase 2:
- Installation of a ‘sandwich’ membrane system (geotextile, waterproof membrane, geotextile).
- Assembly of the geocellular attenuation crates in two rows, with side panels secured by clips.
- Enclosing the crates with the same membrane layers as the bottom.
- Installing, connecting & sealing the inlet and outlet pipes, along with a vent pipe.
Phase 3:
- Backfilling the tank and covering it with a top layer of soil and gravel.
