When it comes to individual wastewater treatment systems, it can be quite challenging to understand the regulations imposed by the local authorities, especially the distances from the septic tank to the house.
What distance does my Septic Tank need to be from my house?
Depending on your wastewater treatment system and the type of housing you are about to equip, the metric logic behind the installation can vary.
In order to guarantee Irish water quality, the EPA code of practice has listed the norms to respect single dwellings and small communities in the Republic of Ireland.
Those rules apply to you and your housing as a potential future owner of a Tricel Novo (wastewater treatment plant) or a Tricel Vento (septic tank). It is your responsibility to ensure that they are scrupulously executed.

Distance from Septic Tank to house EPA code of Practice requirements
If you are about to invest in a new wastewater treatment solution (domestic wastewater treatment plant, septic tank, polishing filter or even packaged systems), there are a few things you need to know about the installation to have the right distance from Septic Tank to the house.
The Epa code of Practice has created a distance calculator which states your septic tank needs to be.
Distance from Septic Tank to house:
- 5 metres away from surface water soakaway
- 10 metres away from the watercourse or stream
- 10 metres away from the open drain
- 50 metres away from any lake or foreshore
Trees and site boundaries, such as fences, must be 3 metres from your wastewater system and 4 meters from the road.
Last but not least, you must ensure a 7-meter distance to your house. For homeowners equipped with a percolation area, a 10-metre distance has to be warranted from one wastewater treatment facility to another.
This standard was introduced to prevent any type of dysfunction in your wastewater treatment and the quality of the treated wastewater.

Installation of a new septic tank at Claran National School, County Galway.

Is it possible for more than one house to share a wastewater treatment plant?
There are a variety of plants available from Tricel for different options. You will need to discuss this with your local council.
Do I need concrete to install the plant?
A concrete base and surround are not required when site conditions are considered dry. However, a concrete surround is necessary if the site is considered wet or a 500 mm/750 mm riser is fitted. Depending on the conditions of your site, your engineer will recommend a suitable installation requirement.
Can I install it myself?
In addition to each plant supplied by Tricel, a comprehensive installation guide is also included. Before beginning the installation process, you must be sure you can meet the requirements outlined in the manual. You should seek advice from your onsite engineer regarding specific site conditions.
