WASTEWATER TREATMENT
Wastewater Treatment Plant
OVERVIEW
If you have a house that is not connected to the main sewage system, you must installed an individual sewage treatment system.
Below what’s included in this article.

Wastewater Treatment Plant advice – What are the treatment levels?
Primary treatment: wastewater originating from the house (including toilets, sinks, and showers) flows into the tank.
In a sewage treatment plant, the effluent enters the primary settling chamber. Within this chamber, settlement takes place as heavier solids precipitate out of the wastewater, forming sludge at the tank’s bottom, while lighter solids rise to form a scum layer on the water’s surface.
Primary treatment is the only treatment phase in a septic tank. With a wastewater treatment plant, it occurs in the 1st chamber (the primary chamber).
Secondary Treatment: in a wastewater treatment plant, following the primary settling chamber is the aeration chamber.
It houses abundant naturally occurring bacteria thriving on specially designed filter media. These bacteria feed on the waste, extracting it from the effluent. A continuous air supply from a low-pressure, high-volume compressor located in the top section of the unit supports these bacteria. Wastewater repeatedly flows through the filter media, ensuring exceptionally high treatment efficiency.
Tertiary treatment: Tertiary treatment additional treatment processes which result in further purification than that obtained by applying the primary and secondary treatment. This is the last treatment, it is applied, if for special cases, additional treatment is necessary.
In summary:
- Septic tanks provide primary treatment only.
- Wastewater treatment plants offer secondary treatment.
- Combining a septic tank with a sand polishing filter or packaged filter system results in secondary treatment.
- Pairing a wastewater treatment plant with a sand polishing filter or packaged filter system yields tertiary treatment.
How does a Tricel Novo Wastewater Treatment Plant work?
Watch our dedicated video.
See below the treatment stages inside a Tricel Novo.
- The wastewater enters the plant.
- Heavier solids settles at the bottom and create sludge. Lighter solids floats to the top to create the scum.
- The aeration chamber where a constant supply of air (from a compressor located under the top lid) sustains naturally occurring bacteria who feed on the waste, removing it from the effluent.
- The clarification chamber or final settlement chamber. Any remaining tiny bacterial particles separate from the liquid before it exits the plant. This decelerates the liquid flow, enabling the last traces of impurities to settle at the tank’s bottom. A sludge return system then sends these impurities back to the primary settlement chamber.
Sizing a Wastewater Treatment Plant
In order to calculate the proper size for your sewage treatment installation, we will use the Population Equivalent metric.
This metric is calculated with the number of bedrooms in your house.
Wastewater treatment advice, please find below the table:
Number of bedrooms | Population Equivalent (PE) |
---|---|
2 | 4 |
3 | 5 |
4 | 6 |
5 | 7 |
6 | 8 |
7 | 9 |
8 | 10 |
