How does a domestic sewage treatment plant work?

Inside the Tricel Novo treatment plant, there are 3 chambers.

Stage 1: Primary Settlement Chamber

During the initial phase of wastewater treatment, the primary settlement chamber facilitates anaerobic breakdown. Wastewater enters this chamber, where solids settle to the bottom, separating from the liquid.

Stage 2: Aeration Chamber

The subsequent stage of wastewater treatment involves aerobic breakdown within the aeration chamber. Here, specially designed filter media host colonies of naturally occurring bacteria. These bacteria thrive on air continuously supplied by a dedicated air blower located in the unit’s upper section. As the effluent traverses the filter media at a slow pace, the bacteria metabolise the waste, effectively removing it from the effluent.

Stage 3: Final Settlement Chamber

In the final phase of wastewater treatment, the effluent transitions from the aeration chamber to the final settlement chamber. Suspended sludge, comprising bacteria, accompanies the liquid into this chamber, settling at the bottom. A continuous sludge return system then “air lift” this settled sludge back to the primary settlement chamber. The treated effluent remaining now meets the requisite standards for safe discharge from the Tricel system.
