WASTEWATER TREATMENT
saf sewage treatment plant
OVERVIEW
SAF – Submerged Aerated Filter Design
We recommend SAF sewage treatment plants for commercial projects, especially if organic matter is to be reduced (BOD and COD reduction) or if ammonium is to be reduced (NH4).

Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) design characteristics:
- Low maintenance requirements and very stable cleaning process
- Adaptable to fluctuations in incoming water (particularly in connection with Tricel’s buffer tank)
- Energy-efficient
- Minimal footprint
In the Maxus plants, the following components are present:
- A septic tank for solids retention (No.1 above)
- The buffer tank for timed inflow of treatment water (No.2 above)
- A treatment unit in which the bacteria live on submerged aerated filters (aerated zone – No.3 above) and settling zone (No.4 above) to remove suspended solids.
- From the settling zone to the septic tank, there is recirculation. All solids are sent to the septic tank this way. Aerated water containing oxygen is returned to the septic tank, eliminating the system’s hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and reducing smells.
Maxus one-step system
Maxus one-chamber systems treat wastewater to a standard of 20-30-20 level for saf sewage treatment plant.
- 20 BOD
- 30 SS
- 20 NH4
The Maxus two-step system
The two-step system is ideal if you are looking for higher-quality effluent, such as reducing BOD outgoing to below 10 mg/l.
Maxus three-step system
The three-step system is recommended where there is a lower ammonia requirement.
This process can reduce Ammonia (NH4) to less than 5 mg/l.
Examples of SAF sewage treatment plants:
Above-ground installation at a factory in County Cork
Above ground treatment unit, followed by the underground septic and buffer tank.
In-ground installation at a hotel in Scotland
A septic tank (not in the photo) is installed before the treatment unit. In this case, the buffer tank was part of the treatment unit for ease of installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS PE ?
PE represents the initials of Population Equivalent. Population equivalent: conversion value which aims at expressing non-domestic applications in terms of domestic loading based on 1 person creates 60 g/day BOD5 and 150l/day. DIFFERENT PRODUCTS SOLD BY TRICEL
Tricel Novo & Vitae
Both are wastewater treament plant solutions manufactured by Tricel. Wastewater treatment plants offer a superior quality of treatment. For example, the Tricel Novo comprises of three independent wastewater treatment zones and offers an average of efficiency of 95.9% BOD removal.
This is a higher treatment standard than the effluent from a septic tank. Please note: all wastewater treatment plants used in Ireland must comply with the EN12566-3 standard and all septic tanks must comply with the EN12566-1 standard..
