WASTEWATER TREATMENT
Sewage Treatment Plant Size
OVERVIEW
Selecting the correct sewage treatment plant size accurately is crucial to ensure it effectively handles the volume and characteristics of wastewater produced by a particular setting, preventing overflow or system failure.
Proper sizing enhances efficiency, reducing operational costs and environmental impact by optimising treatment processes. It also ensures compliance with regulations, safeguarding public health and the ecosystem from pollution risks associated with inadequate sewage treatment.
How to determine the size of your wastewater treatment ?
To calculate the size of individual sanitation. We will use a common metric. In Ireland, this metric is the equivalent to the population count.
What is Population Equivalent or PE ?
According to the definition of the OECD “Population equivalent (in waste-water monitoring and treatment) refers to the amount of oxygen—demanding substances whose oxygen consumption during biodegradation equals the average oxygen demand of the wastewater produced by one person”. To calculate we assume that one unit equals 60 grams of BOD per 24 hours.
How to calculate the Population Equivalent (PE) in Ireland ?
The population equivalent will be calculated with the number of bedrooms in the house.
This calculation is from the Code of Practice: Waste Water Treatment and Disposal Systems serving Single Houses for all installations inferior to 10 PE.
The table below is going to summarise the calculation.
Number of bedrooms | Population Equivalent (PE) |
---|---|
2 | 4 |
3 | 5 |
4 | 6 |
5 | 7 |
6 | 8 |
7 | 9 |
8 | 10 |
How to pick the right wastewater treatment system?
To select the correct sizing, please follow the table below.
Please remember this table is here to help you determine the right size. Please contact a technician and follow the local regulations.
Size in PE | Tricel Novo (wwtp) | Tricel Vitae (NI only) | Tricel Vento (septic tank) |
---|---|---|---|
1-6 | IE6 or IE6+ | UK 6 | Vento 6 |
7-10 | IE8 or IE10 | UK 9 | Vento 12 |
11-12 | IE12 | UK 12 | Vento 12 |
13-18 | IE18 | UK 15 | Vento 20 |
18-24 | IE24 | UK 20 | Vento 20 |
Why it’s important to determine the size of your sewage treatment solution.
Sizing correctly your installation is essential to make sure the system in place is not over utilised or under utilised.
What is the problem if my installation is not the right size?
- If your sewage treatment plant is undersized, it won’t handle the volume of waste from your property effectively, leading to foul odors, blockages, and potential overflow issues.
- If your product is oversized: do you think having a larger product can reduce the number of desludging? You are right, but too oversized its product can also have negative consequences. Indeed, if the size is too large, the treatment quality will drop because there will not be enough wastewater supply for the treatment processes. The number of bacteria will not be enough to treat wastewater properly and have a sufficient effluent quality. (this is true only for wastewater treatment plants. For septic tanks, being too big is not a problem).
You understand determining the size of your product is an important step. For any request about a sewage treatment plant, contact your Tricel technician.

Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS PE ?
PE represents the initials of Population Equivalent. Population equivalent: conversion value which aims at expressing non-domestic applications in terms of domestic loading based on 1 person creates 60 g/day BOD5 and 150l/day. (Code of Practice: Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems Serving Single Houses (p.e. < 10), EPA)
DIFFERENT PRODUCTS SOLD BY TRICEL
Tricel Novo & Vitae
Both are wastewater treament plant solutions manufactured by Tricel. Wastewater treatment plants offer a superior quality of treatment. For example, the Tricel Novo comprises of three independent wastewater treatment zones and offers an average of efficiency of 95.9% BOD removal.
This is a higher treatment standard than the effluent from a septic tank. Please note: all wastewater treatment plants used in Ireland must comply with the EN12566-3 standard and all septic tanks must comply with the EN12566-1 standard..
Tricel Vento
The septic tank from Tricel is manufactured as a primary treatment. Designed for the settlement of your effluent. This product may need an additional treatment like the Sandcel or Puraflo.
