In Ireland, local authorities may specify higher effluent quality levels in specific circumstances and site assessors would recommend tertiary systems based on their findings.
Tertiary treatment treats wastewater to a higher quality for discharges to surface water or for reduction of nutrients and pathogens in sensitive areas.

What are tertiary treatment systems?
Overview
The tertiary treatment system generally consists of packaged filters installed after the secondary treatment plant. These systems provide additional treatment to wastewater and are ideal for homeowners, engineers, and local authorities alike.
The multiple benefits include considerably reducing the footprint of traditional percolation areas and the risk of clogged or poorly constructed underground percolation areas.
For pressurised wastewater treatment plants, Tricel offers two types of tertiary treatment systems: Tricel Sandcel and Tricel Puraflo.
Tricel Sandcel Sand Polishing Filter – Tertiary Treatment System
Tricel Sandcel Sand Polishing Filter uses certified sands and gravel layers with a specially designed pipework network to disperse and treat the effluent.

- You have a small site with restricted areas as it is discharged to a gravel base underneath the filter box.
Tricel Puraflo Packaged Filter System – Tertiary Treatment System
Similarly, Tricel Puraflo uses a pressurised pipe network over coconut fibre to treat effluent.
Ideal when…
- You want a reduced footprint.
- You want an easy system to install. The Puraflo modules are “Plug and play”, ready to be installed.
- You want peace of mind. Tricel comes and connects all the pipework and commissions the unit.
- You want a quick installation: ½ day to install in most cases.
- You want a PIA tested system.
Pumping the effluent to the tertiary systems
Most tertiary systems get positioned above the outlet of a packaged wastewater treatment system. A pump must pump the effluent from the secondary wastewater treatment plant to the tertiary system in such cases.
Two options are possible:
- A packaged treatment plant that includes a pump for ease of installation (Tricel Novo wastewater treatment plants can have an integrated pump).
- A separate pump chamber is located after the septic tank or wastewater treatment plant.
They are both equally viable options and deliver a similar flow.
Importance of the equal distribution of effluent
Puraflo and Sandcel systems have been designed to accept and evenly distribute the pumped effluent from a packaged wastewater treatment plant. With this design, a low-pressure pipe network takes into account the distance and head from the secondary treatment plant while ensuring the pipe network is adequately pressurised according to the specifications. By designing the system in this way, the media are prolonged and the effluent is treated to the highest level possible before discharging from the unit.
We, at Tricel, have extensive experience with other types of dispersion systems within the Tricel product range, such as tipping buckets and gravity-fed pipe channels. In our testing, we found that these options work better when receiving gravity-fed effluent and not pumped effluent. Consequently, Tricel only offers pressurised networks for Tertiary products. Pressurised tertiary treatment systems such as the Puraflo and Sandcel guarantee equal effluent dispersion, which allows for better treatment quality of the effluent.
